The 4 principles of osteopathy
Body unity: The concept of the body as a unit indicates that when we make a change to one structure, we affect the body's overall balance. The human body is connected through the vascular, nervous, lymphatic, and endocrine systems, but also through the connection between body, mind, and soul.
Structure governs function: This principle refers to the fact that when a change is made to the structure, there will be an impact on function. Some osteopathic philosophies view this principle as bidirectional, meaning that structure governs function and function governs structure.
The rule of the artery is supreme: For a structure to function properly, it must have adequate blood supply. Blood contains the nutrients and oxygen necessary for maintaining proper balance, as well as for collecting and removing waste products.
The principle of self-regulation/self-healing of the body: This principle assumes that the body contains several systems that allow it to self-regulate, such as systems for repair, adaptation, compensation, and defense.
